Turbine fire at Cork wind farm

The Cork News, issue no. 243, Friday 20th–Thursday 26th June 2014

Forestry and hill scrub had to be doused by members of the Bantry Fire Brigade after a turbine at the Upper Lee Wind Farm caught fire and two of its blades detached, setting light to trees and grass left tinder dry after the hottest day of the year.

Eight members of the Bantry Fire Brigade tackled the blaze over the course of two hours on rough ground at a hillside outside Ballingeary.

With the exception of the destroyed windmill, there was no further property damage and nobody was hurt in the incident, which took place on Thursday afternoon. The fire service was alerted after several locals noticed plumes of smoke rising from the wind farm.
