Windfarm gets time extension from regulatory commission

A time extension has been granted to a Seven Persons-area 120Mw windfarm project by the provincial regulatory commission this week.

Pteragen Canada’s $200-million Peace Butte wind project was originally planned to break ground earlier this year and be operational by late 2015.

However, the company filed a project extension application in late May with the Alberta Utilities Commission requesting to have until the end of 2016 to complete the windfarm.

The original AUC approval came just over a year ago.

Pteragen cited current market conditions and delays in changes to the Specified Gas Emitters Regulations. That regulation was established as part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by large industries by creating an off-set market. It also forms part of the provincial Climate Change and Emissions Management Act.

The project has been projected to provide up to a quarter-of-a-million tonnes of greenhouse gas emission off-sets.

The company also stated it has been unable to finalize commercial arrangements for the project.

The Peace Butte windfarm has been in development since 2006 with the first public open house held in Seven Persons in early 2008.
