Wind farm proposal hit by hurricane of opposition

One of the issues taking centre stage on the canvass trail for Listowel Electoral Area candidates is the proposed wind farm in Finuge, which has been met with unprecedented opposition from locals and even those further afield.

Such is the anger among residents that up to 300 families have threatened to abandon their homes en masse if a planning application for 10 giant wind turbines in the area is given the go ahead.

Since the project was first mooted, the local North Kerry Wind Turbine Awareness Group has voiced staunch opposition, holding numerous public meetings and demonstrations at county buildings, with the group inviting election candidate to an open meting on the issue only last month.

Locals fear the sheer size of the turbines will dominate the rural community, devalue homes and cause disruption to local life through noise and ‘shadow flicker’. There are also huge implications for the rest of north Kerry in the current flashpoint over wind energy. Huge swathes of the region have been identified as having the capacity to support windfarm development under a new variation to the County Development Plan.
