I believe in reasonable and practical efforts to protect the environment.
Nevertheless I join with many of my neighbors who live on Earlham College’s eastern and southern borders in opposing the construction of a wind turbine on the college’s property.
The idea has a certain Dr. Strangelove-like quality to it: “Science tells us that wind is a clean alternative source of energy. Therefore we shall build a wind turbine. Alas, there is not a lot of steady wind in our area. No matter; we shall build it as tall as necessary – hundreds of feet up into the sky – so as to capture this precious commodity.”
I wonder what would be the likely effects on other readers’ physical health, property value and aesthetic sensibilities if someone were to erect in their neighborhood a 30-story whirligig that HUMS!
I thank the college officials for deciding to hold this proposal in abeyance; better still if they were to consign it to the dustbin on history.
