RES loses appeal over Llanllwni mountain wind farm plan

Renewable energy firm RES has lost an appeal over plans to build a wind farm on a Carmarthenshire mountain.

RES wanted to build 21 turbines on Llanllwni mountain, near Carmarthen, but the appeal was dismissed by the Welsh government after a public hearing.

Carmarthenshire council had refused planning for the development in November 2012.

Local people have fought a campaign against the development.

The proposals were for the turbines to be sited over around 3,450 acres (1,396 hectares) of crown-owned common land mainly used for sheep grazing about nine miles (15km) north east of Carmarthen.

The council received letters of objection and a petition as well as objections from a range of community, heritage and environmental groups, including the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales.

Members of the authority’s planning committee made a visit to the site, known as Bryn Llywelyn, ahead of making their decision to reject the scheme in 2012.
