Wind turbine protest takes to the skies

Protesters are launching a blimp to reach the same height as a proposed new wind turbine in a Notts village.

The airship will position itself at 67 metres above the ground between Upper Broughton and Hickling, in the Vale of Belvoir.

Villagers are opposing plans by the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham to build a wind turbine in the picturesque villages.

Opposition groups, including Voices Against Turbine, already have the support of Rushcliffe MP Kenneth Clarke (pictured).

They staged a protest meeting at Upper Broughton Village Hall and are encouraging residents to write letters of objection to Rushcliffe Borough Council to put a stop to the plans.

A silent protest outside Southwell Minster followed as the campaign gathered momentum.

Plans also include a 102-metre wind turbine at nearby Elston.

The protesters, who have teamed up with Leicestershire-based wind turbine opposition groups, say the view in the Vale of Belvoir would be ruined by the new turbines and are accusing the diocese of putting money before its followers, but the church insists it is committed to delivering green energy.
