West Grey joins coalition

Yet another area municipality is jumping on the bandwagon, investigating a nuisance noise bylaw for wind turbines.

West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles says Council decided on Monday to throw its support behind the coalition of municipalities looking at the bylaw idea, after an American study came out recently.

That study claimed a link between giant wind turbines and the impact on the health of nearby residents.

Eccles says the low frequency sound is felt by a portion of people, who get swelling in the inner ear which results in vertigo, heart palpitations and other issues.

For years, health officials claimed there was no direct connection between the turbines and the health of neighbours.

Eccles says the noise bylaw doesn’t aim to shutdown the operation of the giant wind turbines, but does aim to have them turned off at night so people can sleep.

He says the American health study shows people who are impacted, can get relief within about 15 minutes of the turbines being shut off, or them moving further away.

Saugeen Shores recently voted in favour of pledging $15,000 for its part of the funding for the work of such a coalition on wind turbine noise.

Kincardine pledged $30,000, while Huron Kinloss has pledged $5,000.

They say the idea is to create what are called “quiet nights” so people can have a good night’s sleep.
