Chapmanslade residents vote against wind turbine

Over 90% of people who attended a pre-application consultation event about the wind turbine proposed for farmland near Chapmanslade, indicated their opposition to it, according to the campaign group Stop Thoulstone Farm Wind Turbine.

The turbine would be erected on farmland between Chapmanslade and Cley Hill, close to neighbouring villages of Corsley and Upton Scudamore.

The consultation was held by the developers of the proposed 87m tall turbine. The campaign group conducted a poll of 270 people as they left the exhibition of the developers’ photomontages and explanatory leaflets held at Chapmanslade Church on Monday 28th April.

Tim Page, a spokesperson for Stop Thoulstone Farm Wind Turbine said, “The developers ought to take serious heed of what local people are thinking.

“Most people, once they investigate and carry out a little research into the issues surrounding industrial scale onshore wind turbines, discover that they are useless in terms of electricity production, make next to no net CO2 reduction, are noisy, unsightly and out of place in the countryside, kill bats and birds, and reduce local house prices or make them unsaleable. So that 90% of people against them is only likely to rise as people learn about these machines

“It’s a folly and rip-off scam of our times. They are only being built to lap up the subsidies on offer. Cynically the developers currently de-rate the machines just to pull in the highest Government subsidies.”

The developers are Frome businessmen and landowners, Robert and Alan Welch together with Tony Robinson. The agents are a Swansea-based firm, Seren Energy.
