Resident to present petitions on recall, wind power

CANTON â€“ Chris Dailey gave selectmen a “heads-up” on four petitions, including a recall petition, that he plans to bring to the Town Office on Saturday.

The recall petition is for an ordinance that would require a procedure for the removal from office of an elected official from any board or committee. It calls for that procedure to be presented for a vote at the annual town meeting.

Another petition asks for a wind power ordinance to be written and presented for a vote at the annual town meeting June 12.

A third petition calls for an ordinance that would require any cost of improvement or purchases that exceed $5,000 to be approved at the annual town meeting or a special town meeting.

A fourth petition would require the town to elect the fire chief by secret ballot every three years.

In other business Thursday night:

* The board approved a verbal proposal for street sweeping from David Bowen not to exceed $400, contingent upon receiving a written proposal.

* The town needs an Animal Control Officer and the Dixfield ACO was not interested, Selectman Rob Walker said. The board asked Town Clerk Kathy Walker to contact Maine Animal Damage Control of Lewiston to see whether it would be interested in covering Canton.

* Resident Lisa Cummings asked the board about fire chief qualifications. Selectman and fire Chief Shane Gallant said they must have National Incident Management System training.

* A resident complained about the yard sale on Route 140 that lasted all last summer. Selectmen agreed to look at junkyard ordinances to see whether the sale qualified as a junkyard.

* A resident reported that children were playing on the heap of bricks from the torn-down fire station on Route 108. Selectmen hope someone will be interested in taking the antique bricks, which might have been made in Hartford.

* David Bragg submitted a proposal for digging graves. Sexton Donald Cummings has been doing the job and the board asked Lisa Cummings if he were still interested. She replied that he would be. The town does not pay for this service; funeral homes pay for it.

* No road foreman had been hired, Gallant said, but he said they were working on it. The former foreman was fired a month ago.
