Homeowners have their eyes on proposed wind farm

CORPUS CHRISTI – Over the last few weeks, the city and the Chamber of Commerce have taken steps to oppose a proposed wind farm out near chapman ranch.

That land is within the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, and officials are concerned the project will hurt economic growth on the southside.

Today, KRIS 6 News asked homeowners nearby what they think about the proposed project.

These are homeowners that live off Staples, between the botanical gardens and crosstown.

If the wind farm goes up, those neighborhoods could be the southern most point for major development in the city.

That wind turbines would be pretty far off in the distance, but they would definitely be visible to the homeowners.

One homeowner told us she definitely has her eye on the project.

“It is very concerning because we kind of like seeing farm fields and open land, which I know eventually was going to be houses anyway. But yes, definitely. To walk into your backyard and see a wind farm is disturbing,” she says.

She added she was concerned about property value.

“We’re not worried about putting it on the market and not being able to sell it, but we have by the same token, we have invested a lot of money, and we’d like to see that property value stay where it is,” she says.

Another homeowner, James Schwarz, told us that for him, the biggest worry is not knowing exactly how it’s all going to play out.

For now, he’s comfortable knowing that at least these wind turbines would be pretty far off in the distance.

“Where I’m at right here, it may not be that big of a deal to me right this minute, but you know, I’m not concerned right now,” he says.

The city is currently trying to annex the land where the wind farm would go up.
