Wind ordinance comment session set for May 14

The Huntington County TAB | April 24, 2014 | www.huntingtoncountytab.com

A public meeting for comment on the Huntington County ordinance regulating wind farms, which was postponed last month because of inclement weather, has been rescheduled for May 14.

The meeting will be held in the auditorium of Huntington North High School, 450 MacGahan St., Huntington, beginning at 7 p.m. It is part of a Huntington County Plan Commission meeting.

Apex Clean Energy, based in Charlottesville, VA, is in the preliminary stages of work that could lead to the establishment of a wind energy project in the southeast corner of Huntington County.

The Huntington County ordinance regulating wind farms was put in place in 2009. It establishes regulations for both the installation and removal of wind turbines, as well as rules for other aspects of a wind farm.

Wednesday’s meeting is being held only to receive public comment on possible changes to that ordinance.

The current ordinance regulating wind farms – the Wind Energy Conversion System Ordinance, Section 720 of the Huntington County Zoning Ordinance – is available online.

To read the ordinance, visit www.huntington.in.us. Choose “County” on the bar at the top of the page and drop down to “Community Development.” At the bottom of the page, under “Related Pages,” choose “Huntington County Zoning Ordinance.” The wind ordinance is on pages 50 to 68 of that document.
