Coalition aims to regulate turbine noise

WEST LINCOLN – A town councillor from North Perth will speak at a future committee meeting on the topic of wind turbine noise.

At its April 14 meeting, the planning, building and environmental committee voted in favour of inviting Warren Howard to speak at an upcoming administration, finance and fire committee meeting. Because of his position on North Perth council, Howard is unavailable for council or planning meetings.

Howard is making the rounds of Ontario’s rural municipalities to drum up support for a multi-municipal coalition that will challenge the province’s Green Energy Act. The group has sought legal opinion and has come up with a proposal to regulate noise produced by wind turbines. The group is proposing a “quiet nights” noise level limit for rural areas of the municipality that would prohibit “clearly audible noises” – such as the low hum of a turbine – during a defined time period.

Howard is making rounds on behalf of the coalition to seek membership from municipalities dealing with wind turbine projects. The member municipalities would share in the responsibility for drafting the bylaw and share in legal costs.

Howard will make a presentation on the coalition at a future administration, finance and fire meeting.
