Proposed power line route avoids Pike County

A controversial power line will be avoiding Pike County, according to a recent release from the company.

Following a formal letter from the Pike County Commissioners stating their disapproval of the line, the Houston company has formulized a route which goes north of the county, avoiding the debated area.

The power company has officially asked the Missouri Public Service Commission for permission to build the high-voltage power line through the state, a step towards the project’s beginning.

The much-debated project, Grain Belt Express (GBE), would transmit electricity generated by wind power in Kansas to Indiana, where it would then be sent on the East Coast.

The proposed 750-mile route includes eight Missouri counties: Buchanan, Clinton, Caldwell, Carroll, Chariton, Randolph, Monroe, and Ralls, and Pike County in West-Central Illinois.

Clean Line Energy Partners says the project would create jobs, boost revenue for counties and schools, reduce pollution and be more efficient than traditional transmission lines, points that have all been debated by local residents and the Commissioners.

GBE hopes for construction to begin in 2016 and believe they could have the line in operation by 2018.
