Maloney in the running for grant to build wind turbines

MERIDEN – One room at Maloney High School could soon run on wind power, if the high school wins a grant that would cover building and installing a wind turbine on the school campus.

The school’s applied for a $20,000 3M “Ingenuity Grant,” a by-invitation-only grant that’s aimed at bringing “new, ingenious learning opportunities into the classroom that further student learning, achievement and application of STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) principles,” according to the technology company’s website.

And though she won’t hear back until May, Maloney Principal Jennifer Straub said she’s hoping to move forward with the project either way.

It started as a brainstorming session between faculty and students, about what type of project to focus on when applying for the grant.

“Sustainability is a very hot topic right now; ‘going green’ is something that everyone is talking about,” Straub said, “and I reached out to our STEM departments because we wanted to do something that would foster a strong collaboration and reach as many students as possible.”
