CORPUS CHRISTI – City leaders today heard, but took no action, on a draft resolution against placing industrial-sized wind turbines anywhere in the city’s extra-territorial jurisdiction.
City councilman Rudy Garza told KRIS-6 news his colleagues on the council agree that a wind farm on the outskirts of town, including one now proposed near Chapman Ranch, is the wrong move.
“I know that some of feel that we need to allow for the potential for growth on the Southside area,” Garza said.
He said the city must use every available space, including in-fill zones inside town and those open areas near the city limits, for development.
City staff drafted the resolution that, in effect, says “No” to any wind farm.
But the city has no real power to stop the current push from Apex Clean Energy to install a 150-turbine wind farm near Chapman Ranch.
That’s because the city has no real administrative or municipal authority inside the extra-territorial jurisdiction, or ETJ.
So they’re drafting the resolution in the hope it will fold into the master plan, now being developed by a Massachusetts-based consultant. That plan is due in about 18 months.
