West Grey supports wind appeal

West Grey is throwing its support behind a private citizens’ appeal of the Ministry of Environment approval of the East Durham Wind Energy Project.

In January, the province issued a Renewable Energy approval for NexEra to build the 23 megawatt wind farm between Durham and Priceville.

Mayor Kevin Eccles says Council considered its own appeal but decided it didn’t have the grounds to support it.

However, Eccles says new information presented by the local resident has changed that, and West Grey will ask to be heard at the Environmental Review tribunal hearing.

On Tuesday, a preliminary hearing is being held into the appeal at 10 AM in the Durham Community Centre.

The full hearing has been set for April 1st, with 12 days set aside for the appeal to be heard.

Although the appeal is based on the MOE approval of the wind turbine project, NextEra Canada plans on being at the hearings.

NextEra wants to build fourteen, 80 foot tall wind turbines in West Grey.

The project was first proposed six years ago.

West Grey is one of the municipalities to pass a motion – saying it is an “unwilling host” for any wind turbine development.
