Offshore wind power conference blows off Cape Wind opponent

When the who’s who of the offshore wind industry blew into town this week for the Offshore Wind Power USA conference at the Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center, there was one notable face missing from the crowd: Audra Parker, the president of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound.

After more than a decade opposing the Cape Wind project and pushing political leaders to take more care when siting such projects in the ocean, Parker couldn’t buy her way into the conference. She purchased one of the pricey tickets (the early-bird option started at $1,999), but organizers called her, told her it would be better if she stayed home, and refunded her money, Parker said.

“I wasn’t welcome,” Parker said. “They basically said that because they worked so closely with Cape Wind, that it wouldn’t be appropriate if I came.”

Conference organizers could not be reached for comment.
