NSW Monaro MP calls for a moratorium on windfarm developments

ABC News | Posted Thu 27 Feb 2014 | www.abc.net.au

The member for Monaro in the New South Wales south east has called for a moratorium on all wind farm developments until the Federal Government has responded to its review of renewable energy targets.

John Barilaro says it would be irresponsible for the State Government to allow proposed wind turbine developments to proceed until the results of the energy review are handed down.

Mr Barilaro says he is against new wind farm developments in principle because he doesn’t like to see government subsidies used to support projects that lack community support.

But he says a moratorium on future developments would not affect those already being built, such as the Boco Rock Wind Farm project at Nimmitabel.

“That one’s a development that’s been passed, it’s accepted, it’s funded and it’s out there being built right now,” Mr Barilaro said.

“This has nothing to do with existing windfarms.

“I think we should just pause before we approve any further wind turbines.

“ Let’s have a look at what’s been modelled, what are those outcomes, what are the problems that we are now seeing and then we can have a genuine debate about the role for wind energy in this country.”
