Meeting on proposed wind turbine project attracts concerned rural residents

A meeting of people from the Rural Municipality of South Qu’Appelle Tuesday about a proposed wind turbine project attracted about a hundred mostly concerned residents.

An energy company is considering installing up to 50 turbines in the RM, near Regina. While the plan is still at the preliminary stages, people at the meeting in McLean expressed concerns about it.

Among their concerns were questions about the potential health effects and what the project may do to land values.

Before anything happens the local government will have to examine the project.

“Ultimately, it’ll be the council that decides whether we go ahead with it or not,” Tom Whalen, deputy reeve of the RM, told CBC News Tuesday.

There are currently six wind power facilities in the province, according to the Canada Wind Energy Association.
