Audubon official urges rejection of wind plant

Lewistown Sentinel | February 21, 2014 | www.lewistownsentinel.com

A recent letter to the editor by an industrial wind plant developer claimed that the reason that industrial wind plants are not permitted on Pennsylvania State Game Lands is that an industrial wind turbine “has a door.” This claim is absurd.

The reasons that industrial wind plants are not permitted on Pennsylvania State Game Lands are:

1. Each industrial wind turbine requires a safety zone surrounding it of 15 acres.

2. Industrial wind turbines cause direct mortality to birds and bats.

3. Industrial wind turbines cause avoidance behavior in wildlife because of the turbines’ noise, movement, and vibration.

4. Industrial wind plant infrastructure, including the turbines, roads, power line corridors, and accessory buildings, cause forest fragmentation.

Juniata Valley Audubon, a regional conservation organization with more than 500 members in the Juniata Valley, asks the citizens of Mifflin County to reject the proposed industrial wind plant on Jacks Mountain. Mifflin County’s natural heritage does not deserve such an insult.
