TORRINGTON – A local farmer who spent nearly $20,000 to remove a wind turbine left on his property by a now defunct company will have a portion of his costs reimbursed.

The City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to pay $11,500 to George W. Klug.

The funds were collected from an insurance company that represented Optiwind.

The city required Optiwind to post the bond in 2009 when the tower was in planning in the event the company went out of business and left the tower, as it did.

Built in 2010 as a prototype, Optiwind told the city Zoning Board it would remove the tower and its turbines within 90 days of abandonment.

According to an invoice Klug submitted to the city, it cost him $19,279 to tear down and remove the tower from his property. Klug thanked the city for the payment at the meeting. “We took a shot and basically we did not make out as well,” he said.
