Two wind farms close to ancient monuments

Plans for two wind farms near Duns, with a joint total of 33 turbines all over 130m tall, have not gone down well with Historic Scotland.

Both potential wind farms are at early stages; developers haven’t yet submitted planning applications but have requested a scoping opinion, giving Scottish Borders Council and statutory bodies the chance to comment on the plans.

Commenting on the proposed wind farms at Inch Moor (19, 130m turbines) and Black Rig (14, 132m turbines), Historic Scotland expressed: “strong concerns about the impact of the developments at this location on two scheduled monuments which we consider raise issues of national significance.

“We consider that Dirrington Law scheduled monuments have an extremely important setting which is very susceptible to change. We consider the current proposal adversely affects the setting of the scheduled monuments and raises issues of national signficance.

“Consequently if this were to come forward as a planning application, Historic Scotland would object to the application.”

Black Rig wind farm developers, RES UK Ltd, were invited to attend this month’s Duns Community Council meeting.
