Due to malfunction wind turbines stop generating power

The Madikeri CMC had found an unconventional way of overcoming erratic supply of power one and half years ago.

However, the much hyped wind energy project has remained suspended for the last two months, as blades of two wind turbines erected at Kaveri Kalakshetra park has stopped rotating.

The project was taken up at a cost of Rs 48 lakh. However, owing to lack of maintenance, it is crying for attention. As expected, the wind turbine has failed to generate 15.3 kilo watt electricity.

The CMC had decided to erect wind turbines to reduce the dependence on power grid and save electricity bill in 2012.

Accordingly, two wind turbines were erected at Kaveri Kalakshethra, another at Stuart Hill Road. Now, the one erected at Stuart Hill is functioning and has been generating little amount of electricity. Along with the blades, even solar panels were installed. The electricity is generated from solar panels.

The project was taken up under Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Town Development Scheme. It was proposed to generate 5.1 KV electricity from one wind turbine. The CMC had plans to supply electricity to CMC office and commercial complexes.

“Owing to poor quality of work of the tower, the wind turbine has started shaking. If blades start rotating, there are possibility of collapsing. Hence, the CMC staff had switched off the wind turbines,” said surces.

CMC Assistant Engineer Shivakumar said that a Bangalore based firm that had erected wind turbine has been asked to repair it. “Once the repair work is taken up, electricity will be generated,” he added.
