Anglesey wind turbines catch fire in storm

Wind turbines in Anglesey burst into flame in the gale force winds that hit North Wales.

The flaming turbines were described as “giant Catherine wheels” after catching fire between 6pm and 7pm yesterday near Cemaes.

Emma Shortman, who lives nearby, said: “I was letting the dogs out and saw flickering blue and red sparks coming from the hub of the turbine.

“Then it lit up like a candle.”

Mrs Shortman said another turbine caught fire on the other side of her house 20 minutes later.

She said: “I’ve never seen it happen before. There were sparks coming off the turbines. I was worried they might set the other turbines on fire. After an hour, they seemed to burn themselves out, but were still flickering as if they might start again.

“The hubs of the turbines are all burnt today, but they’re still spinning. If the wind picks up and the blades keep spinning, I’m worried they could come off.”

The fire service said it was called to three wind turbines on fire in the area, but did not take any action at the scene.
