Killington wind turbine decision ‘called in’ by government

The Westmorland Gazette | 6th February 2014 | www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk

The Government has called in a controversial decision to site three wind turbines close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Last week, South Lakeland District Council’s planning committee approved plans to build the trio of 132 metre turbines, on land north of Killington Reservoir.

This was despite strong local opposition from neighbouring parish councils, local residents and influential bodies.

But now it has been revealed that the department for Communities and Local Government has called in the decision.

The secretary of state has the power to take over planning applications rather than letting the local authority decide.

He will normally only do this if the application conflicts with national policy in important ways, or is nationally significant.

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the decision.

He said: “In light of concerns expressed by local residents, I welcome the news that the decision has been ‘called in’ by the Secretary of State. I hope that the government will look at this issue forensically and independently.”
