Vestas blade breaks at Danish wind farm

Credit:  29 January 2014 by Patrick Smith, windpowermonthly.com ~~

A blade from a Vestas V90 3MW turbine has snapped on a wind farm in the north of Denmark.

The blade from the V90-3MW machine broke on Sunday night at a wind development near Sæby, northeast Jutland, run by operator Hojstrup Vind.

While the cause of the break is not yet known, Vestas said it will carry out an investigation to determine the root of the incident. The turbine was only installed in December.

Vestas confirmed that at the time of the break, the wind speeds in the region were not exceptionally high.

The V90 has been a mainstay for high-wind sites, with more than 2,800 installed worldwide, since its launch in 2003.

In November, Vestas launched a new high-wind turbine, the V105-3.3MW, which it said will largely supersede the V90.
