Even though it received lots of public encouragement to recommend to the township board a new wind turbine generator ordinance, the Elbridge Township Planning Commission went a different direction and unanimously passed a two-year moratorium on wind turbine development following a public hearing Jan. 21

Saying he agreed with property owner Larry VanSickle, who suggested the idea, planning member Eric Herrygers entered the motion to adopt the moratorium and received support from Rick Helmer.

“This gives us plenty of time to see what’s coming down the pike,” Helmer said.

Planning commission Chairman Bruce Vartian opened the public hearing by describing the processes he’s been through for the last two years when he was initially contacted by Craig Herremans about the wind turbine ordinance before Herremans became township supervisor. He said the planning commission later received a petition with 176 signatures, asking the planning commission to revisit the issue and the board received a petition request that it adopt a moratorium.
