Councillors’ fury as wind turbine approved

Cambrian News | 23 January 2014 | www.cambrian-news.co.uk

Porthmadog councillors say they are outraged after council planners gave the green light for a wind turbine to be built in Morfa Bychan.

In a recent Gwynedd Council planning committee, permission was granted to erect a 13.8m turbine on agricultural land at Cefn, despite objections from locals. Concerns over the decision were voiced at this month’s Porthmadog Town Council meeting, who had previously said they opposed the application.

Cllr Selwyn Griffiths, who represents Morfa Bychan on Gwynedd Council said: “I am very disappointed that a small majority of the planning committee made the decision to grant this application. “It does concern me, as I feel it may lead to other applications being submitted which would end up ruining this beautiful area.”

Cllr Griffiths had put forward his objections to the application at the planning committee, and stated that granting permission would affect the wildlife in the area.

Cllr Jason Humphreys echoed Cllr Griffith’s concerns and suggested contacting the planning department at Gwynedd Council. He said: “Unfortunately, we only rely on tourism in this town after some big businesses have left the area like Gelert.
