Residents oppose turbine

Halifax Courier | 21 January 2014 | www.halifaxcourier.co.uk

A proposed 100ft wind turbine in Mount Tabor has been opposed by residents who say it would be too close to nearby housing.

Oldfield Farm has applied to Calderdale Council for the turbine to be put on their land and say it would help secure their future.

But local residents opposed to the plan say they have had 65 letters of objection, with another 65 still to be submitted to the council.

Mount Tabor resident Steve Kusyj said: “It’s only going to be 200m from houses on Heath Hill Road and would completely overshadow the area, which is green belt land.

“There would be no benefits to the community, only to the farm who would get cheaper electricity. It would also have an impact on the local wildlife.”

But farmer Guy Mallinson said: “This turbine is vital in order to secure the farm’s future. It’s very difficult to make a living these days solely out of farming.

“It’s a natural resource, non-polluting, and we’ve bent over backwards to do everything we can about people’s concerns. We’ve carried out noise and ecological assessments.

“The landscape has been created by farming. That land has been a quarry and a landfill site in the past so it’s been industrial for most of it’s life.

“It’s a green field now but that’s been created by us.”

The application is due to go before the council’s planning committee in two weeks.
