FERDINAND, Vt. – Property owners in the United Towns and Gores of Essex County have voted that they do not want a wind farm on Seneca Mountain.
The Seneca Mountain wind proposal calls for upwards of 20 turbines on Seneca Mountain overlooking areas of Newark and Island Pond. UTG land owners sent in their ballots in the non-binding vote at the end of last year. The results – counted late Monday afternoon – show that out of 282 property owners, 171 are against the proposal and 107 voted in favor.
Officials with Eolian Wind, the Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based company behind the project, have said they would abide by the will of the majority of voters.
The controversial project would also have to pass muster of the Public Service Board. Ss far the board has only approved wind measurement towers.
