Walwyns Castle wind turbines backed

A Walwyns Castle wind turbine application was unanimously approved by members of Pembrokeshire’s planning committee on Tuesday, January 7.

The applicant sought permission to erect two 55kw wind turbines on land to the south and east of Solbury Farm, each measuring 34.2 metres in height.

Planning officers recommended that the plans be approved subject to conditions, including a standard time limit for implementation, development in accordance with revised siting details, and compliance with noise levels, assessment and mitigation.

The site is located approximately 1 kilometre to the north of Tiers Cross, to the east of the local road which runs from Tiers Cross to Ratford Bridge, and to the south west of Haverfordwest in an area of open countryside.

Tiers Cross Community Council raised a number of concerns about the proposal, while Walwyns Castle Community Council gave its approval.

Speaking on behalf of the applicant, Martin Horne said the limited visibility of the site made it a ‘highly suitable’ location for wind turbines, and approving the application would result in a ‘win win scenario’, for the applicant and the environment.

Local resident Mr Jones addressed the committee on behalf of the objectors. He said the site adjacent to turbine two contained a variety of bird and plant life, as well as an endangered species of butterfly.

He also raised concerns about the development’s proximity to the road, which could lead to motoring accidents. “Only last Sunday night a car overturned on that dangerous stretch of road,” he said.

Cllr Brian Hall’s motion to recommend approval was seconded by Cllr Wynne Evans, and the vote was unanimous in favour of the proposal.
