Community group looks for new site for community wind farm near Castlemaine

An environment group hoping to set up a community wind farm in the Castlemaine region is looking at new sites for the project after abandoning its original plan.

The proposal for up to six turbines at Baringhup emerged in November 2012, but hit trouble last year when people living nearby expressed concern.

The Mount Alexander Sustainability Group says that since then it has signed an agreement with the landowners to not pursue the project in the area.

Group spokesman Mick Lewin says attention is now turning to other sites around the Mount Alexander Shire.

“In fairness to those people I can’t sort of say where they would be yet – there’s nothing definite about them,” he said.

“At this point of time they’re purely exploratory and they have always been.

“Alongside the Baringhup site, we’ve been talking to these other sites.”
