Smaller Starston wind turbine bid still draws opposition

A revised application for a wind turbine in Starston by agent Green Power Solutions UK is set to be decided by South Norfolk Council’s development management committee in the coming months.

The revised application for a 24-metre turbine, for White House Farm in Cross Road, was submitted in November.

A South Norfolk Council spokesman confirmed the council is waiting for amended documents from the developer, as the application re-sites the turbine due to ecology issues, before it is decided.

In August a bid for a 34-metre turbine at the same location, close to the border of the parishes of Starston and Pulham St Mary, was submitted to the council, but was subsequently withdrawn at the end of October.

A public meeting was called on November 26 at the Jubilee Hall for residents to discuss the potential plans, while the Starston Parish Council has written to South Norfolk Council to object to the development.

Starston Parish Council chairman Edward Libbey said: “The council considered all of the views and came to the conclusion that it was an inappropriate application for the village.

“It would be near to residents, at the top of a hill, and would be visible for a long, long way.

“The parish council is clear is it not objecting to wind turbines in principle but this one was completely disproportionate for the scale of the landscape.

“It is up to the South Norfolk Council. We have objected in the strongest possible terms and we would be disappointed if they did not respect those considered views of Starston.”

Parish council clerk Dee Palmer added: “It would be, by some distance, the tallest structure for some distance around and the council’s view is it would be out of scale with the surrounding parishes.

“It would have a detrimental impact on the wider landscape.”

Pulham St Mary Parish clerk Lisa Aston confirmed the council had received no objections from residents, and a no comment response would be submitted.
But minutes from a parish council meeting held last month stated councillors believe the revised application will have an impact on the view across the valley from Pulham St Mary towards Starston.
