Ellershouse wind project seeking approval; Environment assessment registered with province Dec. 19

Time is ticking for the public to weigh in on the environmental assessment completed for a wind project proposed for the Ellershouse area.

Minas Energy, a division of Minas Basin Pulp and Power in Hantsport, has been commissioned by the Alternative Resource Energy Authority (AREA) to construct the 16.1-megawatt wind farm.

Once operational, the seven-turbine wind farm will generate electricity for the towns of Berwick and Mahone Bay.

AREA registered the Ellershouse Wind Farm Environmental Assessment, completed by Strum Consulting, with Nova Scotia Environment on Dec. 19.

“There is a 30-day public comment period which, taking into account closures during holiday time, will run from now until Jan. 28, 2014,” said Mary-Frances Lynch, community relations manager for Minas Energy, in an e-mail to the Hants Journal.

A hard copy of the environmental assessment is available for viewing at the Ellershouse Post Office and the West Hants Municipal Office. An electronic copy of the environmental assessment can be viewed at: www.novascotia.ca/nse/ea/ellershouse-wind-project.asp.

Environment Minister Randy Delorey is scheduled to decide whether or not the environmental assessment receives his stamp of approval by Feb. 17.
