Work underway on controversial wind turbine

Ilkeston’s skyline changed forever this week as work continued on the Bennerley wind turbine.

The 430ft turbine in the Erewash Valley, is 630 metres from homes in Cotmanhay and 750 metres from Awsworth.

Controversy has surrounded the wind turbine since the planning application was first put in with residents fearing it will impact on their health, cause TV interference and ‘visual pollution.’

The turbine, which will generate power for Severn Trent’s sewage works at Halls Lane, Giltbrook, towers above the grade-II listed Bennerley viaduct and is visible from most of Ilkeston.

Cranes could be seen putting up the post last week with the propellers yet to go on.

Dawn Parry, who sent in the above photograph, can see the turbine from her Cotmanhay home. She described it as an ‘eyesore.’

She said: “It sticks out like a sore thumb and looks absolutely awful in my view.

“You hear the measurements being talked about but you can never imagine that it will be as big as it is.

“I never thought it would be that tall and look hat bad and it’s not finished yet.

“I’ve been told they’re really noisy so I’m not looking forward to that. I just hope there’s no more planned.”

Plans for the turbine were first given the go-ahead by Broxtowe Borough Council in June 2011.
