Girvan wind turbine plans rejected by government

Plans which would have seen a wind turbine erected on land at Girvan Mains Farm have been rejected by Scottish Government ministers.

The decision came last week after an appeal had been submitted by Ailsa Horizons, the social enterprise and charity in the town’s Dalrymple Street in September.

South Ayrshire council rejected Ailsa Horizons’ application for the 67-metre turbine in June, citing the impact the turbine would have had on the landscape character and visual amenity of the area.

That decision has now been upheld after a decision by reporter Richard Dent.

Ailsa Horizons expressed their disappointment at the decision.

Lesley Fisher, Community Asset Development manager for Ailsa Horizons commented: “We are obviously disappointed at the decision and we are now looking at alternative options for a wind turbine.

“There has been a great learning curve to get to this stage.”

The report which dismissed the appeal was largely positive to Ailsa Horizons case including over community benefits but cited that the proposed turbine site at Girvan Mains farm was on land important to the setting of Girvan.

The reporter agreed with third party concerns that the turbine would have a visual impact on the town.

And he also referred to the council’s emphasis on the staus of the A77 and taking into account the designated scenic area, he said that the turbine would be visually intrusive.
