Taylorville residents voicing complaints about factory noise

Tonight, the city of Taylorville will discuss numerous noise complaints–the result of the new wind turbine at the Ahlstrom filtration plant.

Residents who live near the plant, along with representatives of the company, have been invited to attend tonight’s meeting.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency mandated that Ahlstrom add the new equipment to the plant. It creates a high-pitched noise, which bothers residents.

“They understand that they live next to a factory, and the noises that come with a plant like that, but when they try to sleep at night, they hear this humming, and it, volume-wise, I don’t think it’s any worse than it has been,” Taylorville mayor Greg Brotherton said. “But I think there’s a different tone to it, and I think that’s what’s bothering the residents.”

The mayor said the city and Ahlstrom have come to compromises in the past, and he hopes a solution can be found tonight.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Taylorville Municipal Building.
