Permit application for wind turbine proposal withdrawn

The proposal for placing two 445-feet wind turbines within Marshalltown city limits is no longer as the applicant has withdrawn the application for a special use permit for the project Tuesday.

Stephen Troskey, city planner, said the next step to get the special use permit would have been approval from the Board of Adjustment Tuesday.

Troskey, who is not speaking on behalf of Karsen Rumpf of Marshall Winds LLC, the proposer of the project, said often if that recommendation does not go well, the applicant will withdraw because he or she gets a feeling that it’s not something the board of adjustment wants.

The Plan & Zoning Commission voted unanimously Thursday, with the exception of two absent members, against a recommendation to the board of adjustment of approval for a special use permit.

During that meeting, residents in the area of the proposed project, located southeast of Marshalltown on a farm parcel between East Merle Hibbs Boulevard, 18th Avenue and Iowa Avenue East, voiced their opinion.

“I think the people in the 4th Ward, especially out on the 12th Avenue area are probably very happy that’s come that way,” said Al Hoop, 4th Ward council member.

Bill Martin, a resident in the southeast neighborhood, said he was.

“The mission of the southeast neighborhood has been accomplished,” Martin said. “Valuable citizen input to the Plan & Zoning Commission committee’s process has been exercised.”

Rumpf did not return a message left for him Tuesday.
