St. Croix County wind farm appeal rejected

The St. Croix County town of Forest has lost its appeal in a fight over a proposed wind farm.

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin rejected a permit for the $250 million Highland Wind Farm in the town in February over questions regarding noise but reversed itself in September after the developer, Emerging Energies of Wisconsin, addressed the concerns and reapplied for the permit.

Attorneys for the town filed a motion Nov. 14 asking the PSC to reconsider its approval, but the agency denied that motion as of Dec. 16, leaving the town 30 days to potentially file an appeal in circuit court, PSC spokesman Nathan Conrad said.

Some neighbors and town officials are concerned the proposed wind farm, which would consist of up to 44 wind turbines generating a total of 102.5 megawatts of electricity, would harm the health and quality of life of nearby residents. Other town residents are excited about the prospect of a major investment in the community and being part of a renewable energy project.
