More turbine plans on horizon

Another wind energy company is looking to build an 80m (262ft) turbine in the Lune Valley.

Cirrus Energy, based in Berkshire, have made initial enquiries with Lancaster City Council about building the turbine at Sunny Bank Farm in Kirkby Lonsdale Road, Arkholme.

FELLS (Friends of Eden, Lakeland and Lunesdale Scenery) said it continued to be “extremely worried” about wind farm developers attempting to install large industrial wind turbines in the Lune Valley area.

Tim Sarney, from FELLS, said the turbine would stand 100m higher than the River Lune, and would be extremely prominent from both sides of the Lune Valley and well into Cumbria including at Hutton Roof.

He added: “The turbine location is only 750m from the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

“It is clear that a wind turbine of this size will have unacceptable landscape and visual impacts on the Lune Valley and Hutton Roof, and on the ‘setting’ of the Forest of Bowland AONB – any planning application forthcoming should be refused.

“The proposed turbine is a similar height to the turbine recently installed at Back Lane Quarry near Carnforth, next to the M6.

“Can you imagine what a turbine of this size will look like installed on the highest hill of the north bank of the lower Lune Valley?”

Another company, Cheshire-based Community Windpower Ltd, who were refused planning permission for eight turbines at Claughton Moor in June, have until December 24 to appeal the decision.
