Gamesa probes Irish blade snap

Spanish turbine manufacturer Gamesa has launched an investigation into how a blade tip snapped off one of its G80 machines during storms that lashed the northwest of Ireland.

The blade embedded itself into the ground near to the affected turbine during the incident, which occurred during a period of sustained high wind at the end of last week at the 10MW Corkermore project.

The wind farm is owned by Corkermore Wind Farm Limited with Energia buying the electricity produced at the site 9km north-east of Killybegs.

In a statement, Energia said the turbine brought itself to a stop automatically at some point after the incident and that there was no damage to other turbines or facilities.

Gamesa technical staff are examining the single turbine affected and will also carry out precautionary checks on the other turbines at the site.

National planning body An Bord Pleanala recently approved a four turbine extension to the wind farm, which has been producing power since 2011.
