Piedmont reaches wind farm deal with Apex Clean Energy

PIEDMONT – Agreements between the city of Piedmont, Central Oklahoma Property Rights Association, and Apex Clean Energy have cleared the way for 300-megawatt wind farm development in Canadian and Kingfisher counties.

The two agreements come after months of negotiations.

Virginia-based Apex Clean Energy Inc. is developing the Kingfisher wind farm in northern Canadian County and southern Kingfisher County. The development is not in the city limits of Piedmont, but the city council passed an ordinance Aug. 26 declaring large wind turbines within three miles of the city a “public nuisance.”

The agreement between Apex and Piedmont defines where wind turbines may be placed in relation to the city limits, replacing the boundary established by the city council, which repealed the Aug. 26 ordinance.

“I appreciate the efforts of Apex in working with us to address the concerns of our citizens,” Piedmont City Manager Jim Crosby said in a statement.

“We are committed to working with nearby communities when we develop wind energy projects,” said Kent Dougherty, Apex director of project development.

Kingfisher Wind will generate enough electricity to power about 100,000 homes.
