MoD and RSPB withdraw Nathro wind farm objections

The Ministry of Defence and the animal charity RSPB Scotland have withdrawn objections to plans to create the biggest wind farm in Angus.

Eurowind wants to create a 17-turbine development to power up to 28,400 homes at the Careston Estate, near Brechin.

The MoD had said the plans could interfere with radar systems for RAF Leuchars.

The RSBP also raised fears that the development could affect the local golden eagle population.

However, Eurowind said that following detailed bird population modelling work, carried out at the request of the RSBP, the charity’s objection to the Nathro wind farm development had been fully withdrawn.

The company said the issues raised by the MoD had also been addressed and its concerns allayed.

Ian Lindsay, director of Eurowind said: “We are delighted that Nathro Hill wind farm has received a clean bill of health from both RSPB and the MoD.

“It’s important that a wind farm that will make such a major contribution to Scotland’s energy security and environmental goals, can co-exist happily with the needs of national security and wildlife.”

Plans for the development, which was announced last year, remain controversial and have drawn many local objections.

Scottish ministers are due to decide next year whether or not the project can go ahead.
