Canterbury Council aims to partner with rural wind farm to reduce energy usage

An urban-rural wind farm partnership is on the cards with Canterbury Council keen to increase its uptake of renewable energy.

As part of the South Sydney Regional Organisation of Council’s renewable energy initiative, Canterbury Council plans to reach 30 per cent of renewable energy use by 2030.

Developing a business case for a partnership with a rural organisation was high on the list.

The council general manager Jim Montague said the partnership could lead to a power purchase agreement.

“The renewable energy masterplan identified a range of possibilities for SSROC to consider, including the development of an urban-rural wind farm partnership as a possible investment or opportunity for a power purchase agreement,” Mr Montague said.

An SSROC team is expected to discuss recommendations including the wind-farm partnership, before it develops an action plan for the endorsement of each member council.
