Open houses on proposed wind farm near Tumbler Ridge this week

A new wind farm is proposed near Tumbler Ridge, and the public has until mid-January to comment, with open houses scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday night in the South Peace. The Meikle Wind Energy Project would see 68 wind turbines operated 33 kilometres northwest of Tumbler Ridge for an estimated 25 years.

It’s been proposed by Meikle Wind Energy Limited Partnership, a subsidiary of Finavera Wind Energy. The wind farm is now undergoing an environmental assessment by the province.

The project is one of 25 that were awarded Electricity Purchase Agreements in 2010 under a call by B.C. Hydro for clean energy to supplement its power grid. If approved, it would create a maximum of 187 Megawatts of power, which is reportedly enough to power more than 56,000 homes. The electricity would be transmitted to a connection with Hydro’s grid near Highway 29 between Tumbler Ridge and Chetwynd.

The project is expected to create 175 person-years per year employment during the construction phase, which is expected to take 12 to 18 months, and 18 person-years per year during the operations phase. Construction is planned for 2014 to 2016.

An open house will be held Tuesday, December 3 from 4:30 to 7:30 at the Recreation Centre in Chetwynd, followed by one in Tumbler Ridge December 4 during the same period at the Trend Mountain Conference Centre.
