Residents turn out to check plans for a wind turbine at Lazenby village

Plans to erect a wind turbine on the outskirts of an east Cleveland village have gone on public display as residents continue their fight to block the scheme.

Airvolution Energy is planning to erect a turbine measuring up to 140m on land at Turners Arm Farm at Yearby, near Redcar.

The turbine would be about 700 metres from the nearest home, but some people believe the sheer scale of the structure will have a damaging effect on their lives.

More than 30 people attended an information day at Lazenby Village Hall today (Wednesday, November 27) to speak to representatives from the company.

The company, which specialises in small scale developments, has submitted its plan to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

Malcolm Duckering (CORR), from Yearby, went to the day with an open mind, but with concerns about the impact on the village’s Grade I and II listed buildings.

He said: “I’m not against wind turbines, I’m certainly not one of those ‘Nimby’ people, but I do have some concerns about this application and the fact that it is only half-a-mile from my property.

“The village is a conservation area and I know how difficult it is to do anything to my house, such as fitting windows, but it would appear that they are able to erect a 140m turbine on farm land in the village.”

Karen Keedy, of Yearby, believes the developer is trying to take advantage of the location and the surrounding industrial landscape.

She said: “They seem to think that just because we look onto the Wilton industrial site that we will be happy to have wind turbines built in the village.

“Yes, we do look over the site but it is across the A174 and this village is not an industrial area.

“There is already an application for another turbine at the other end of the village, so what is to stop other applicants wanting put around the village?”

Residents have been supported by Redcar MP Ian Swales who raised concerns about the location of the wind turbine in Parliament on the eve of a community event to outline the proposals.

Alison Hood, communications manager for the company, said more than 30 people had attended the event, but there had also been many comments left on the company’s website.
