Members of the Glenties Wind Farm Information Group met this week with senior officials at the Irish Desk in the European Commission’s environment directorate. Marian Harkin, MEP, who facilitated the meeting, called it, “the start of a process”.

“It was an opportunity for groups to see what the European Commission could and could not do,” she said.

Ms. Harkin said there is “no silver bullet here, no one piece of European legislation to help ensure we have a proper planning framework in place to deal with the unprecedented level of wind farm applications”.

“However EU legislation allows citizens to be part of the process,” she said.

Members of the Glenties group called the discussions, “constructive and beneficial to all parties involved”.
