ORLAND, Maine – Residents voted 439-258 in support of a three-turbine wind project that has been proposed for their town. That gives Portsmouth-based developer Eolian Renewable Energy the go-ahead to proceed with plans to construct the turbines on Whites Mountain in northern Orland.

Under Eolian’s proposal, the turbines would produce 9 megawatts of energy, enough to power about 2,700 average Maine homes.

Orland residents who live near the proposed development expressed concern at a public meeting last week that the turbines would reduce their property values. Other residents welcomed the $150,000 in tax dollars the project would bring to the town and the opportunity to produce clean energy locally.
