Colchester County approves new wind turbine bylaw

TRURO – By a slight majority, Colchester County Council has granted approval to a new bylaw that places a setback distance of 1,000 metres or one-kilometre from the nearest residence.

The previous setback distance was 700 metres but some residents were pushing for a setback distance of two kms.

But following public presentations and lengthy discussion Thursday night, during which some councillors had argued to have the setback distance changed to 1,500 metres, second reading of the new bylaw was approved on a 7-5 vote.

Another major change to the bylaw is the introduction of a maximum sound tolerance of 36-decibels. Any turbine found to be operating above that level can be ordered shut down.

Councillors Wade Parker, Christine Blair, Mike Cooper, Lloyd Gibbs and Karen MacKenzie voted against the motion while those voting in favour were Mayor Bob Taylor and councilors Mike Gregory, Ron Cavanaugh, Doug MacInnes, Tom Taggart, Bill Masters and Geoff Stewart.
