MoD safety concerns over wind turbines

A farmer appealing a decision to refuse permission for wind turbines faces a tough fight after the MoD raised concerns with planning inspectors.

Documents seen by the Rasen Mail reveal the Ministry of Defence has written to the Planning Inspectorate about Ermine Farms Ltd’s plans for two 35m wind turbines at Heath Farm in Normanby by Spital.

A statement said: “The MoD maintains its objection to the Heath wind turbines due to the unacceptable interference to the air traffic control radar at RAF Waddington.

“I respectfully request that the inspector gives full consideration to aviation safety when deciding upon the outcome of this appeal.

“In the current circumstances, the MoD considers that a planning condition would not be appropriate to address the MoD concerns.”

The pig farmer’s planning application was turned down by West Lindsey District Council at the start of the year.

The council said the proposed turbines would have a detrimental impact visually, detract from the rural character and impact on the appearance and amenities of land.

Before launching an appeal, Ermine Farms submitted, and withdrew, another identical application.

Residents living near the proposed site of the turbines have also written to the Planning Inspectorate outlining their concerns.

About 170 people have signed a petition. They are worried about the impact the turbines would have on horses, wildlife, road safety, views of the open countryside and autistic children who use a nearby riding club.

A supporting statement in Ermine Farms Ltd’s planning application said retailers were looking for “high environmental performance” from suppliers and were keen to see on-site energy generation.

The Planning Inspectorate will hear the appeal at WLDC in Gainsborough on Tuesday, November 26.
